History
It is thought that the bay was named after the two-masted schooner Venus' that traded around the Eyre Peninsula coastline in the mid 1850s. A far more romantic notion is the bay was named by Matthew Flinders after the Roman goddess of beauty and love. It is the latter version which is promoted by the locals and visitors to the region. There used to be a police station at Venus Bay also.
Some trivia…. In 1862 Venus Bay police request a new stone building as the old Station building was propped up and likely to tumble down. In 1863 Venus Bay Trooper Gerhardy dismissed from the service because of his drunkenness and bad language. Luckily none of that stuff goes on nowdays. |
